Don’t Let Insurance Companies Dodge Payouts – Stop Senate Bill 244

Protect Policyholders, Not Big Insurance – Reject Senate Bill 244!

You pay hefty, and ever-increasing, amounts every year for insurance, with the idea that you’ll be protected in the event of an accident.

The South Carolina Senate is considering sweeping changes that would devastate small businesses and families like yours. The proposal would only enrich the big companies at the expense of every-day people like you who trust those companies to help when they need it most. And what do we get in return? Nothing.

Senate Bill 244 aims to make it harder for people who suffer losses to recover from the insurance company. Instead of protecting policy holders, it would shield insurance companies that drag their feet on claims.

One example: S.244 would give insurance companies three months to decide if they’ll pay, even if there is no question that the money is owed. If you disagree with their decision and are forced to sue, S.244 would give companies an additional 10 months to decide what they want to do.

Think about that: Insurance companies can hold out of paying your claim for over a year. That’s an eternity for policy holders forced to juggle mountains of bills pouring in and endure the tremendous stress of uncertainty.

And S.244 backers have the audacity to call this “reform.” It’s not reform. It’s tilting the scales of justice in favor of insurance companies.

Now is the time to fight back against this attack on your rights. It’s up to all of us to remind senators that we, not Big Insurance, elect them. It’s time to remind them that our interests should be their top priority.

We encourage you to find how to best contact your senator and representative and tell them to vote “no” on Senate Bill 244. Read the full bill here.
